Among Glenn Ford’s competitors for leading roles in the 40s and 50s was actor William Holden, who was also Glenn Ford’s best friend.  Both actors, Ford said, would stuff paper in their shoes to appear taller than the other. “Finally, neither of us could walk, so we said the hell with it.”  The spring before Holden unexpectedly died, he dropped by Glenn’s house on his birthday May 1, 1981, and gave him his cape that he wore in his first starring role in 1939’s Golden Boy.  “This is something very special to me,” Bill told Glenn, “and I would like you to have it.  We have been through a lot together.  You are my very best friend.”  On November 11, Holden fell and hit his head on a table and died unable to call for help.  Glenn was so devastated he went on a bender that landed him in St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, went home for a week and then collapsed again and was admitted a second time.  Some time afterward Glenn was quoted as saying that he still felt Bill’s loss.  “William Holden and I weren’t just friends. He was my very best friend.  I feel his loss very much still.”
